Do your kids love asking questions, hands-on activities, beautiful picture books, and learning more about God’s creation? My youngest son is always creating and inventing. Give the kid a box and duct tape and soon you’ll have an espresso machine or a fire place (true stories). He’ll combine elements from multiple toys to create elaborate designs. And if he had his way, homeschooling would probably be nothing except science experiments from morning to night, with some audiobooks and read alouds filling in any gaps.
Do you have one of Those Kids? You know, the one who would rather be running than sitting, building and experimenting rather than sitting at the table with pencil and paper?
One of the joys of homeschooling is that we can work with our children’s tendencies and interests, harnessing their unique gifts in a way that encourages creative learning.
But sometimes, especially as a homeschool mom of many, it can feel overwhelming to try to make it all up on our own from scratch. That’s why I love Sonlight’s Science curriculum! It’s the epitome of easy-to-use: they send me a box with all the books, experiments, and supplies I need. All I have to do is open and go!
The Sonlight Science C curriculum (covering forces and interactions, life systems and cycles, weather and climate, and engineering Design) has been a perfect fit for our homeschool this semester.
It’s geared for grades 3 to 5, and I’ve been able to use it with both my 7-year-old and my 10-year-old at the same time. After all, science projects are a whole lot more fun when your sibling is doing them with you!
Each topic we study flows from a beautiful picture book, involves simple activity pages to reinforce what we’ve read, and culminates with a fun experiment to answer a topic-related question.
What’s included in Sonlight Science C?
Sonlight Science C Instructor Guide
Easy to use schedule pages tell you at a glance what to do each day. You can choose from the 4-day or the 5-day schedule. I went with the 4-day schedule, but we’ve actually applied it more in a 2-day schedule. Going all in on science a couple days a week works better in our family routine this year.
Activity sheets (and corresponding answer guides) provide opportunities to children to narrate back and reinforce what they’ve learned from the daily readings.
Discover and Do Science Experiments
Science experiments are, of course, the most fun part of the science curriculum in my kids’ opinion. And with the Discover and Do Science supplies box, I can actually make science experiments a regular part of our homeschool plan! They’ve collected all the random materials ahead of time, which makes it so much easier for Mom. No planning required, and minimal prep needed.
The science experiments relate directly to each week’s reading, as well, so they don’t feel like busy work.
The Discover and Do Science experiments paper packet provides the necessary templates, forms to label, and early introduction to lab reports (hypothesis, experiment, conclusion).
Sonlight Science Books
And, of course, I can’t overlook the core of what makes Sonlight’s homeschool curriculum so great: literature-based learning! Sometimes I read the book aloud to both my 5th grader and 2nd grader; sometimes Big Sister reads aloud to her brother. Either way, we love the beautiful books included in Sonlight Science C this year.
Here are the books included in Sonlight Science C:
- Did You Know? Science, DK

- Magic Schoolbus and the Electric Fieldtrip, Cole
