Recently at church we sang the lovely hymn “Shine Thou Upon Us, Lord” by John Ellerton. If you are looking for an aid to prayer or devotion, may I commend this hymn to your study? Although not originally written as such, I feel like it could be appropriately titled “The Mother’s Prayer.”

“Shine Thou Upon Us, Lord”
by John Ellerton

Shineย thou upon us, Lord,
True Light of men,ย today,
Andย through the written Word
Thy very selfย display,
That so fromย hearts which burn
with gazing onย thyย face
Thy little ones mayย learn
the wonders ofย thyย grace.

Breatheย thouย uponย us, Lord,
Thyย Spirit’s living flame,
That soย with one accord
Our lips may tellย thy Name.
Give thouย the hearing ear,
Fix thou the wand’ringย thought,
that thoseย we teachย may hear
the great thingsย thou hastย wrought.

Speak thou for us, O Lord,
In all we say of thee;
According to thy Word
Let all our teaching be,
That so thy lambs may know
Their own true Shepherd’s voice,
Where’er he leads them go,
And in his love rejoice.

Live thou within us, Lord;
Thyย mind and will beย ours;
Be thou belov’d, adored,
and served with allย our pow’rs,
that soย our lives mayย teach
Thy children what thou art,
And plead,ย by more than speech,
For thee with ev’ry heart.
