Learning in Your Homeschool
Learning doesn’t have to be boring. Research shows the more kids are engaged and excited about learning, the more they retain. There are lots of ways to help kids learn to love learning in a homeschool setting.
Participating in hands-on activities is an easy way to encourage kids to get excited about what they’re learning and provide real-world context for your students. Engaging in science experiments, gameschooling, and even field trips are ways to make learning fun in your homeschool.
3 Important Ingredients For Real Learning In Your Homeschool
Over the years, we’ve discovered a few important ingredients for real learning in our homeschool. Checking for these three essential ingredients has helped us to ensure that real learning and fun are happening.
Easy
First, it needs to be easy. This doesn’t mean that we don’t ever cover topics that might be challenging at first. It just means that we try to make learning easy for Emily and easy for me.
If your child hates coloring, using coloring pages to teach letters isn’t going to be easy or fun and probably won’t result in a lot of learning. Similarly, if you despise setting up science experiments, conducting elaborate hands-on science experiments won’t be an easy way to encourage learning in your homeschool. The easiest way to encourage real learning in your homeschool is with activities that are easy for you to say yes to creating.
Interest-Led
Interest-led learning is one of the top ways to ensure real learning is happening in your homeschool. When kids are excited about the topics and the activities spark their curiosity, you’ve succeeded! Encouraging our kids to dig deeper into the topics they’re passionate about and look for answers to all their questions is an excellent way to encourage learning in your homeschool and foster a culture of lifelong learning for your family.

Fun
Finally, learning has to be fun. Few kids will want to complete an entire page of multiplication problems, but what if you print two and make it a race? That might get competitive kids excited about math.
What if learning multiplication facts is fun because it’s part of a game? There are games for every subject to help kids practice concepts from multiplication to spelling, science, and history. Plus, they’re a lot of fun!
When kids are having fun, they’re excited about learning, interested in what comes next, and willing to try things that might not seem easy at first.
